Almost a decade after losing his wife, Frank Van der Haas feels like life is over. His boys are grown; his job doesn’t interest him; and he can’t quite find reason to get up in the morning. When his oldest son, a temporary staffer at St. Ninian’s Sanctuary, invites him to visit, Frank accepts and heads to the island as fast as possible.

When the owner of St. Ninian’s sends her tickets to visit, at her daughter’s request, she jumps on a plane to the island on the southern tip of the world, hoping Pearl won’t take one look at her and send her away.
Frank and Opal come to the island to apologize to their children, not meet broken soulmates, but instantly they find one another and begin the perilous journey toward wholeness, both with their children and, to their surprise, within themselves.
Unfortunately, their arrival coincides with an island feud between the owner and his brother, and these two failed parents may have to step in and use more wisdom than they knew they had to set things right and keep the island open. Seems God’s plans for them are much bigger than their plans for themselves.

- This book is flipped from the last. The main romance here is later-in-life, and there’s a subplot romance between a younger staffer and a guest.
- Frank Van der Haas has been showing up in my books for a long time. Father to Eric from Boys of Summer’s Cross Country, he feels like an old friend, and writing his happily ever after was very satisfying.
- Those who have read the whole series will enjoy the next stage in the ongoing saga of the island’s owner. (No spoilers for the newbies…)
- Although I write about grandchildren from time to time, like I do in this book, I still don’t have any myself.
