Cobi, a brand new eldsinger, has no interest in leading a group of peers to explore a hidden reef in Portomare’s ocean. The reef they’ve been assigned turns out to have suffered flooding, something that shouldn’t happen in a reef, so this is no easy encounter.
However, when Cobi’s best friend disappears, likely dead, on their first day on the reef, the team changes its mission, needing to find him at any cost. In their mad search for Mica, they discover Cobi’s girlfriend has an unusual skill here, one of the team suffers a crisis of identity, and the reef itself threatens to flood again, which might kill everyone inside this time. Along the way they make a discovery that changes everything they knew about the hidden reefs on their ocean floor and the mysterious creatures who put them here a hundred years ago.
Cobi didn’t want to lead. Now it will take everything he has—and then some—not to lose this reef completely. Bog Songs is book four of the Strains of Portomare series, fantasy about an underwater world and the powerful men and women who travel its currents.
Jill's Notes
- Creating animals for this world, like Cirrus, the pipperung, and Garipa, the sea monster, was one of the best parts of writing this series.
- The book centers on the new team of singers, and early readers seemed to love them.
- This book and the next happen simultaneously. Because the next book wasn’t finished yet, I had to be careful, because once this one was published, everything in here became cannon, and I had to work around it in the next one.
- As I write this (9/26), I am struggling to do what I just said I had to do in the last point. But I will make these books mesh…
- The next book is called Chant of the Ruins, and it should release summer or fall of 2027.
